Those who have tried to glue bakelite will have found
that no modern glues are really up to the task. This repair has been
carried out using stocks of a old stock proprietary bakelite solvent
cement to which I add custom formulations of bakelite dust and color
tints. Unit is then finely polished on a cotton buffing wheel.
The example here which took less than 30 minutes, can be perfected
further by using woodgrain wax filler crayons in the cracks before a
final hand polish with paraffin oil. This was not done on this
example. Tip: DO NOT attempt to clean a broken or cracked bakelite
piece until AFTER it has been repaired.
